Everything you wanted to know about the Maidan, but were too afraid to ask

150 150 Time To Talk

At 19:00 on Wednesday the 3rd September 2014, Krytyka Polityczna hosted a discussion about the recent Kyiv Euromaidan, featuring members of the Ukranian branch of Krytyka and of Kyiv’s Visual Culture Research Centre.

This debate was open to all, in English and took place in Krytyka Polityczna‘s Warsaw centre, on the second floor of 16 Foksal Street.

You can see a highlights video here and there is a link to a low resolution, full-length recording at the end of this article.

What made so many citizens of the Ukraine, with all their different political and religious views, divergent social classes, varying economic and educational statuses and often opposing visions of a future Ukrainian state, stand together, shoulder to shoulder on the now renowed Maidan? Why were they willing to trust each other and what convinced them that their joint fight made sense and that opposing the abuses of political and economic power might on this occasion bring a positive outcome? Also, what goals did they have, did they merely wish to remove the compromised authorities or was this something more? Does trust in the power of common effort enable us to build a better country for every citizen or does a successful movement for change also require extraordinary circumstances to succeed? Witnesses of the recent events in Kyiv talked about the, often incomprehensible to people not from the Ukraine, specific circumstances of the Maidan revolution and looked to answer questions surrounding the evolution of events during this tumultuous period.

Participants:

Members of Krytyka‘s Ukrainian editorial board and the Visual Culture Research Centre in Kyiv participated in the debate, including:

Oksana Briukhowecka

Vasyl Cherepanyn

Yustyna Kravchuk

Lesia Kulczynska

Oleksij Radynski

Moderation of the discussion was carried out by Igor Stokfiszewski of Krytyka Polityczna‘s Warsaw establishment.

Free copies of the special Ukrainian edition of Krytyka Polityczna were distributed during the evening.

The special Ukrainian edition of Krytyka Polityczna analyses the visual representation of the 2013-2014 social uprising in the Ukraine. This issue builds on the experience of visual issues developed in editions 18 and 26 (curated by Artur Zmijewski and Yael Bartana respectively) of Krytyka Polityczna to deliver an analysis and critique of the Ukrainian revolution by means of artistic representation. Contributions by artists and photographers (featuring amongst others: Oleksandr Burlaka, Ivan Melnychuk, Tomas Rafa, Nikita Kadan, Oleksiy Salmanov and Lesia Khomenko) are supplemented with textual analyses by members of the Ukrainian editorial board of Krytyka Polityczna, with pieces by many authors, including Vasyl Cherepanyn, Oleksiy Radynski, Lesia Kulchynska, Yustyna Kravchuk and Natalia Neshevets.

Integration

During the evening, a documentary film called Integration was shown. Integration is a documentary showing the development of violent resistance during the Euromaidan protests in Kyiv. The film focuses on the relationships between violence, politics, religion and rituals. While representing the history of the rise of violence at Maidan in a linear way, this documentary looks at the public manifestations of the protest movement and their specific substructures.
