Yaroslav Hrytsak is an historian and essayist, who works as a professor at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. He is the author of many books, including Нариси Історії України: Формування модерної української нації XIX—XX ст. [Essays on the History of Ukraine: The Formation of the Modern Ukrainian Nation in the 19th and 20th Centuries] (1996), Страсті за націоналізмом [A Passion for Nationalism] (2004), Пророк у своїй вітчизні: Іван Франко і його спільнота [The Prophet in his own Country: Ivan Franko and his Community] (2006), Ukraina. Przewodnik Krytyki Politycznej [Ukraine. A Krytyka Polityczna Guide Book] (a book formed from a series of wide ranging discussions with Izy Chruślińskiej, 2009).
