Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona
The Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona [CCCB] is a public institution, which was created in 1994 with the aim of fostering debates and cultural activities relating to the city, public spaces and other key issues, which affect contemporary societies.
Located in the heart of the old city of Barcelona, the CCCB has made a considerable contribution towards the revitalisation of the area and its work combines these local connections with a focus on global issues and modernity. It presents major exhibitions, organises debates and conference series and hosts literature, dance and independent film festivals. It also carries out research into current affairs and promotes the European Prize for Urban Public Space.
The CCCB aspires to becoming a key space for intellectual debate and cultural dialogue in Europe. It promotes debate therefore from a multidisciplinary perspective, bringing together philosophers, sociologists, anthropologists, filmmakers, poets, writers and urban planners to discuss topics of public concern. It also plays a major role in the translation and projection of academic ideas into civil society and looks to promote the circulation of these ideas globally, ensuring local debates stay connected with the discussions taking place in other parts of the world.
Prominent among the many speakers who have featured at the CCCB are Zygmunt Bauman, Judith Butler, Terry Eagleton, Nancy Fraser, Claudio Magris, Norman Manea, Pankaj Mishra, Herta Müller, Cees Noteboom, Martha Nussbaum, Orhan Pamuk, Rüdiger Safranski, Saskia Sassen and Tzvetan Todorov. The CCCB have also been able to publish many of the speakers listed above, as the best lectures featured at the CCCB are immortalised in text through their publication in the Dixit and Breus collections.
