Ivan M. Havel is a Czech philosopher and academic based in Prague. In 1989, he was one of the founders of the Občanské fórum [Civic Forum] together with his brother Václav Havel. He studied at the Technical University in Prague and holds a PhD from UCLA Berkeley. He has worked as a researcher at the Czechoslovak Academy of Science in Prague. His research focuses on cybernetics, artificial intelligence, cognitive science and its overlap with philosophy. He currently teaches at Charles University in Prague and works at the Centre for Theoretical Studies, a joint Charles University and Academy of Sciences interdisciplinary institute (which he directed until March 2008). Since 1990, he has been the editor-in-chief of the natural science journal Vesmir [Space]. He is the author of numerous studies and several books, including a collection of his Vesmir editorials and his correspondence with fiction writer Michal Ajvaz.
